Tuesday, March 31st, 2015: 

Detectives with the Manatee Homicide Investigative Unit have arrested Alfonso Cano-Cano, DOB 11-30-80, of Palmetto, in connection with the fatal shooting of Oscar Cortez-Ruiz, DOB 11-5-90.  Cano-Cano was charged with Second Degree Murder and booked into the Manatee County Jail this afternoon. (March 31st).  Cortez-Ruiz was shot in his vehicle on March 29th in the 500 block of 60th Avenue East, Bradenton.    

According to witnesses, the victim was at a local bar and then drove to the above location to take someone home.  When the victim pulled up to the residence, Cano-Cano got out of his vehicle and shot him.  The victim got out of his vehicle and collapsed in the driveway.

Detectives learned that Cano-Cano recognized the victim at the bar and followed him to the shooting scene.  Cano-Cano told detectives he shot the victim because of a fight between the two of them that occurred two years ago.   Detectives developed Cano-Cano as a suspect after obtaining surveillance video with the suspect’s vehicle.

March 29th, 2015: 

 At approximately 3:30 this morning (Sunday, March 29th), deputies responded to a shooting in the 500 block of 60th Avenue East, Bradenton.  When deputies arrived, they discovered the victim, Oscar Cortez-Ruiz, DOB 11-5-90, (last known address Palmetto) lying in the driveway. The victim was transported to Blake Hospital where he later died.

According to witnesses, the victim was at a local bar and then drove to the above location to take someone home.  When the victim pulled up to the residence, an unknown suspect got out of another vehicle and shot him.  The victim got out of his vehicle and collapsed in the driveway. The victim was with one other person in addition to the person he was taking home.

At this time, it doesn’t appear this was a random incident.  Anyone with information is asked to call the MCSO at 941-747-3011, ext. 2159 or Crime Stoppers at 866-634-TIPS.
