Shortly after 10 pm on 09/03/19 a driver (victim) pulled up to the gas pump at the Wawa on 2509 Cortez Road, left the keys in the car, with the engine running, while he entered the store.

When he exited the store he noticed someone was in the process of driving the car out of the parking lot. At approximately 10:12 the victim reported the vehicle stolen to MCSO.

About 50 minutes later a deputy notified dispatch that she was behind the stolen car leaving the Holiday Heights neighborhood. Units were able to get behind the vehicle while the Watch Unit (helicopter) was taking off. Ground units were advised to follow as long as the suspect was still obeying all traffic laws. Once Watch and K9 were in place a traffic stop was initiated at US 301 and 53rd Ave East.

The stolen vehicle failed to stop – fleeing west on 53rd Avenue East. Watch called out that they had the pursuit as it turned north on 15th street East. At the 5000 block of 15th Street East units backed off while Watch continued calling out the vehicle’s actions. Units paralleled while Watch verified twice that no MCSO units were in pursuit.

The suspect later parked the car at 600 21st Street East and started running away. When he saw responding deputies, he placed his hands in the air and followed commands to get down on the ground. The suspect was arrested and identified as Dante Brown Jr. (14-year old)

There were no crashes during the pursuit, which lasted 48 seconds with top speed of 55mph before Watch took over. Brown was transported to the Manatee Juvenile Detention Center without incident and charged with
